Welcome to our Alim Blog.  Here we will keep you updated with the learning we have been doing in our Numeracy time.  We may even include a few photos and video clips so that you can admire our awesome thinking!

This week we have been learning about multiplication.  We have discovered that the "X" sign means 'groups of', 'lots of', 'sets of' etc.

We have also learnt that a factor x factor = product.  The first factor in an equation tells us how many groups there are and the second factor tells us how many objects there are in each group.  For example:

4  x   5  means 4 groups with 5 in each group.

We learnt that we can model this on arrays and by doing this discovered that '4 x 5' equals the same as '5 x 4'.

We then learnt that if we know our multiplication facts, we can work out our division facts.  We can practice our basic facts using family of facts e.g

6 x 3 = 18
3 x 6 = 18
18 ÷ 6 = 3
18 ÷ 3 = 6

We are going to focus on mastering instant recall of our 2, 5 and 10 multiplication and division facts so that we can begin to focus on learning our other times tables.

We would love it if you could post comments to us and ask us questions about our maths.
